History of LATICRETE® 4237 Latex Additive

Henry M Rothberg LATICRETE 4237 Latex Additive

A Revolution That Changed Construction

Dr. Henry M. Rothberg, founder of LATICRETE, realized there must be a better way to install ceramic tile than the traditional “full mortar bed” method.

Combining his knowledge in chemical engineering and previous experience in the tile industry, Dr. Rothberg researched alternative methods to improve traditional Portland cement-based installation systems. Dr. Rothberg made a huge breakthrough – inventing a latex additive that can be combined with sand/cement mortar mixes.

With superior bond strength and resistance to weather and frost, LATICRETE® 4237 Latex Thin-Set Additive hit the market in 1956.  This new additive allowed traditional Portland cement to be mixed with liquid rubber – making a strong, durable adhesive mortar with all of the water resistant characteristics of Portland cement, while adding revolutionary shock resistant and flexible attributes. It addressed installation problems plaguing the industry and was an ideal solution for a construction market that was quickly moving to lighter and thinner profile building materials and finishes.

An Innovation that Created a Global Leader

Dr. Rothberg’s knowledge and dedication allowed us to excel as a global leader with innovative construction solutions.  Knowing LATICRETE 4237 Latex Thin-Set Additive could revolutionize the construction market, Dr. Rothberg educated the industry both locally and globally. More than 65 years later, LATICRETE now includes 1,800 team members across 100 countries and 7 continents. With the hard work and dedication of Dr. Henry M. Rothberg, of blessed memory, his family, and the entire LATICRETE team, LATICRETE continues to develop innovative, industry-first products that improve installations across the world.

A Complete Solution That Meets Today’s Needs

Our product portfolio is continuously changing with the global market.  LATICRETE provides an extensive range of solutions offering simple and cost effective installations, while ensuring long-term, flawless applications. In an effort to simplify inventory, 4237 Latex Additive for the U.S. and Canadian markets was discontinued June 1, 2019.

To commemorate the legacy of our founding product, a company celebration was held at LATICRETE headquarters in Bethany, Connecticut. During the event, key team members discussed historical moments and milestones while LATICRETE family, friends, and Board of Directors watched the final production run for North America.
